Accessible Hair Workshops
Hair is deeply connected to how we express ourselves and how we feel – yet many of the techniques, tools and tutorials we take for granted are designed around sight. Hair & Care’s free, monthly, expert-led workshops create a different way to learn. Designed specifically with, and for, blind and low vision women and girls, our sessions use accessible, sensory-led teaching, and offer a space for skill building, connection and empowerment.
About our workshops
-
Led by professional hairstylists trained in Hair & Care’s inclusive approach, each workshop combines expert guidance with hands-on, one-to-one support. Rather than relying on visual demonstrations, techniques are broken down using touch, sound, description, repetition and spatial guidance – giving participants practical ways to understand their hair and learn at their own pace.
-
Styling and caring for your own hair is more than a practical skill – it's a way of feeling confident, in control, and expressing your own identity.
Combined with community learning and direct support from professional hairstylists – our workshops offer tangible, life-changing benefits that extend well beyond the session.
Our participants report a range of impacts including:
Improved confidence, self-esteem & mental wellbeing
Empowerment in self-expression
Lifelong skills development
Independence and reduced reliance on others
Community building and reduced isolation
Our regular workshops also create a welcoming community where participants can learn, experiment, share experiences and build lasting connections.
-
Alongside supporting participants, volunteer hairstylists receive specialist training in accessible and sensory-led techniques – developing practical skills they can take back into their own salons, teams and careers – with many stylists leaving feeling better equipped to welcome and support VI clients.
